Weaving #2 Black & White

Smaller scale papers begin to give students the practice in creating the "Over under" structure that will help with weaving smaller and smaller elements like yarn.

"If you add tape over the weaving you get another pattern."

Learning to weave with Paper

Large scale paper weavings help students learn how to create a stable woven structure. The over under action of the side to side elements "the weavers" takes a bit of concentration and decoding.

Light and Shadow #2

When students experiment with the projected light there is jumping, dancing,  negotiating, conflict, cutting paper & trying out shapes, looking, wondering, making connections.

Exploration of Light and Shadow

In addition to more experimentation with the overhead projector and digital projector  we watched this video of hand shadows (9/18 & 9/19/12).

Monthly Self Portraits

Each week I "push-in" to the K/1 classrooms to introduce an art making experience. A tradition started 3 years ago is to have students make a monthly self portrait. Each K/1 classroom has a gallery wall that display the work throughout the year. In May each student brings home a portfolio of portraits.

This month is chalk pastel.

Exploring Light and Shadow

Students entered a darkened studio and gathered around an imaginary camp fire. We talked about how early cultures gathered around the campfire to tell stories of adventures of the day and history of the group. We listed sources of light that could create shadows. In front of a large projected light students interacted with the shadow of a projected image of a horse from the caves of Lascaux. We then switched to the light of overhead projectors and how to move and manipulate images and interact with
giant shadows.
