VOTING

1870 - 15th Amendment is passed. It gives former slaves the right to vote and protects the voting rights of adult male citizens of any race.

1920 - The 19th Amendment guarantees woman's sufrage.

1965 - Dr Martin Luther King Jr mounts a voter registration drive in Selma, Alabama, to draw national attention to African-American voting rights.

Drawing Portraits from Portraits

Cerrito Creek & Strawberry Creek 4/5 classes worked on practicing drawing people from pictures. Students selected from dozens of xerox copies of portrait paintings which they were asked to render as accurately as possible. Copying the images in black and white sometimes helps students to see the different values in an image.

"One Community Many Faces"

One of The Berkeley Schools' 2^nd year students traveled to Coppenhagen on summer vacation with her family. She and her Mom participated in a group project where everyone at the museum made a face out of clay that was mounted on a wall structure. The sculpture was started at our Fall gathering on September 23, 2012. It's outside the East entrance of the Art Studio. We are continuing to make this community art piece in the K- 8th classes this week. (10/1/12)

Digital Self Portraits

Students worked in groups and partnered to take one anothers' picture. Each student art directed a photo that they wanted taken. Out of eight pictures students edited images down to 5 then to one to print as their September 2012 self portrait.

Changing Expressions

- Eyes, Noses, and Mouths

4/5 classes are working with faces and figuring out how to draw features that change expressions. Each segment of the face changes the expression.

Your Sketchbook Yourself

As an introduction to the art studio this year 2/3 & 4/5 students are working on thinking about sketchbooks in a new way. Here Strawberry Creek works with their sketchbooks.

Altered Books - Strawberry Creek (2010)

Skintones TInts and tones (2010)

A tint of a color is made when a color is mixed with white.
4th/5th grade students were asked to make 10 -15 tints of color to match their own skin. They used brown tempra paint and added white in an attempt to match their own skin color. The lesson was learning to mix paint with a palette knife on a palette, creating a gradation of color from light to dark.
